So I'm looking to possibly upgrade my front speakers in the 95 GTS. It's got the most basic factory audio in it, with the exception of the Alpine headunit I put in. It's a CDA-98xx, I could check the exact model if it makes a difference.
I was just looking for some opinions.
I listen to mostly metal, rock, and some rnb/rap.
I'm more looking to be loud, but I don't want them to sound like crap, you know? My ears are pretty bad (or maybe it's my brain) - I can't really tell much in quality differences when I go listen to speakers other than tone differences.
Should I think about an amp for the speakers, or would my headunit do? I'm using the headunit right now, and it's loud enough when I turn it up, but it sounds terrible on the stock speakers.
I have a pair of Infinity references left over from my other car that I could use, but they have no bass to them at all, and it really bugs me. Is there any way I can improve this, or is it a matter of just buying new speakers.
I'm probably going to be putting my subs back in when I finish my rear seat delete and stuff. (2 12" Alpine Type-R's) and speakers could work out in the rear seat delete too.
Budget is negotiable, I'm not looking to spend a fortune, but I'm willing to spend enough to make it sound good.
The infinities with the subs sounded good enough for me, but it really really lacked midrange. Am I doing something wrong or am I missing something?
Anyways, help is appreciated! THANKS!
ps. Stuff I have sitting around, would like to use them, but it's not necessary: 2 12" Type-R's, RF 450.2 amp, Infinity Reference speakers.

I have never heard an infinity speaker that I felt had substantial midbass.
Your best bet would be to look into getting a set of 6.5 inch components and powering them with another amp. There are a lot of options when it comes to this setup. You need to have a pretty firm budget. You can put together a front stage with around $200, but the more you spend the better it gets.
I would not recommend the rear speaker delete until you have a pretty nice front stage. A good front stage does no good if you can't hear the music.
Just remember that getting an overpriced product for a cheap doesn't make it a good deal. We can help you get a great front stage to suit your budget!

Ok, I just worded that line all wrong. What I was trying to say is that once I get my rear seat delete finished, I was thinking about putting the speakers/amps on the back part of it and have the subs on the the bottom, or vise versa. I'm not planning on getting rid of the rear speakers.
Now for the budget.. I was hoping to kindof get away without putting something exact, but I guess I can't. I don't really wanna spend more than a grand on it all, but I want to be able to listen to music over the 408w I'm putting in. I already have a hard time hearing over my 5.0 So I'd like to keep it under $1k, but I tend to never hit my price goals with anything.
And as a side note, I want it to look good, that's why I bought big-name overpriced stuff =/ ..for the name
Definitely not a must, but the looks are also part for me.
I like to be annoyingly loud, but I don't wanna sound like loud crap.
Full range rear speakers are not used by 99% people that are knowledegable about car audio.
If you have around a grand to spend, here are some options for a great front stage. With these fronts, you will have no need for rears. You could throw your infinities back there, but it will just destroy your soundstage.
Depending on what type of speakers you buy, an amp can easily be purchased that will power them. Here are a couple types of the amps I'd be looking at.
If you are putting in a 408W, then you car about performance. Get the better equipment that will blow your socks off instead of getting rice-tastic looking equipment. If somone knows car audio, they will respect the names above 100X more then alpine or rf. (Excluding the Alpine F1 series comps)
What's it gonna take to get a 6.5 into my door? I thought the stockers were different size. Will the speakers come with an adapter plate, or am I gonna need to buy one separately?
I dunno if I need so much fancy stuff haha. I seriously walk into one of those home theater demo rooms, and can't tell the difference between the $2000 pair of speakers and the $400 pair other than loudness. Which are both too loud already..
There should be a thread in the sticky about making 6.5's fit into a 6x8 hole. It is super easy, and if its not there, search the forum and you will find it.
I would invest more into the speakers then the amp. You could easily run that 450.2 to the front comps, but I would always use the nicest amp to power the front channel. The high frequency distortion in an amp doesn't really effect subs.
Dynomatting your doors is an excellend idea.
I would look into getting the elemental designs amp and some of thier sound deadening. They will give you a discount when you buy a package. If you are not stuck on your RF amp for your subs, get yourself an elemental designs 900.1 for the subs and a 200.2 for the fronts. That means when you descide to upgrade to some real subs you will have enough power.
You don't need a 4 or 6 channel amp because you won't need to expand. If you are stuck on rear fill, just use your infinites and fade heavily towards the front on your HU.
