Default Can't access the rear speakers in a 96 coupe

I'm trying to get access to the rear speakers in my 96 coupe, I've unbolted the 3 bolts behind the rear seats, and gotten the 2 plastic screws out of the rear deck. I'm getting conflicting information regarding whether or not I need to remove the whole backseat, or if I can get access to the speakers by just folding the rear seats down. The rear deck below my rear window isn't lifting off even after having the 2 plastic screws removed, and I can't see any other bolts or pieces I would have to take out. Can anyone provide some insight, or even better yet pictures?

once you take out the rear pillars it slides out. I recomend taking out the top of the back seat as well to avoid bending or breaking the cardboard covers.

When you get all that out, and go to re-install the speakers mount them from the bottom so that you will not need to go through all this again.

Thanks for the tip, but what do you mean by "rear pillars"? Do you mean mount the speaker so it's facing down (on the bottom side of the panel) or have them facing up (like they are now) but just take them off the top and bolt them through from the bottom?

The pillars are the panels between the quarter window(the one in the back) and the back window. If you remove the clothing hanger hook, as well as the seat belt location on top the panel will pull right out. Be carefull around the rear window defroster connction, you might want to disconnect it first.

I am actually putting those panels back in my car either tonight or tomorrow. If you want I can take a pic or two but will also have better instructions afterwards......

Your rear speakers WILL NOT fit correctly upside down, not only will it sound like sh1t but you wont be able to get the cardboard piece back on since the magnets will be sticking straight up through the back. In my 03 it was a biatch to remove however you might have to try slightly bending one of the corners towards the back of the window to get it to come out of its slot.

the rear panels are easy to take out and only require two tools. Push the plastic piece that covers the seatbelt on the B-pillar(between the front and quarter window) up and it will pop off. Use a T50 torx bit to remove the seat belt on top. Next use a phillips screwdriver to remove the coat hanger hook, and be sure to put it in a safe place, they are easy to loose and hard to find(ask me how I know). Once all that is off, just push on the connector for the rear window defrost and the plug will come off. Now you are ready to pull the entire panel towareds you to release the clips and it will pop off. Do the same thing on the other side.

I never liked the rear deck of the mach system and decided to re-do it. I have some more work to do on it before it is ready for paint but here is where I am at. The two holes in the middle are for the diamond audio cross-overs. Page 12 shows were I am at with it.

Cool, thanks for the advice on that guys.

The current speakers are total crap, and I've decided I'm just gonna get 4 new speakers and a new head unit (one that can natively support my iPod)

For speakers I'm thinking of getting Alpine SPR-69C for the front and back if they will fit. Someone said you could fit 6x9 in the door speakers, but I kinda doubt that and I'm having trouble finding out the exact speaker dimensions for the doors. I know the back speakers are rated for 6x8 but I'm just gonna cut bigger holes in the back tray.

For the head unit I'm looking at a Pioneer DEH-P5100UB.

Anyone see any potential problems with this setup or suggestions on different speakers? Will this head unit be enough to drive these speakers? Will a speaker amp make a noticeable difference?

you will increase the time to install the 6 x 9s over a set of 5x7 or 6x8 by 3 times, and not notice any sound difference.
