Default Quick kicker amp (?)

Hi, I have a Kick ZX550.3 in my 05 mustang. It has been istalled for go figure 1year 1 month.

Anyway I it is running a set of CDT EF80 8" sub in the doors and a set of 5.25 alpine components. For the past week my sound started cutting out, it only happend a few times and each time it would last for a minit or two then come back. I finaly got to pull over and look at the amp today. It looks like it has been going into protection mode. Green light turns Red. What is causing this. the volume was not loud at all maybe 1/4 the way up. You could still have a conversation in the car.

I think my componets are blown I have even had to turn the setting down on the amp because they where popping so bad. I think the tweets blow. Could the problem be with the amp be the 5.25 speakers?

thanks
Michael

The problem could be anything.

You could have a short in your speaker wires. You could have a short in the comp's corrsover, one of your speakers could have shorted.

Get a multimeter and check the resistance of each speaker set at the amp. If you have anything lower then 2-4 ohms it could be problem.

This could be a great reason to ditch the alpines and get a good comp set. We need to make sure your amp is fine first.

i would start by unhooking one speaker (at amp) see if it still does it, then keep going till u can narrow it down to one path (ie wire or speaker)

hell it could be amp

sorry it took so long to get back. Works been hell with the cold weather we have had.

I just checked the resistance

The CDT "8 4ohm SVC wired in parallel
2.0 ohm

The alpine components
Left 3.6 ohm
Right 3.8 ohm

Is that in range? What do you mean Ditch the alpines and get a good set. I spent 150 on them. I think they are SPX 13REF's. What would you recommend in the 150 rang? I am sure I need a set any way

thanks for the help

Since all the static resistances look ok I would do what the other guy said and remove each speaker to see if you still have the problem.

It could easily be a blown tweeter or crossover component that doesn't start shorting until it gets hot.

That being said, you might want to make sure your speakers are not shorting out on anythign and all your runs of speaker wire are in good place.

You also want to check your power connections (both +12V and ground). A loose fuse holder or battery connection or a weak ground connection can cause an amp to shut down when it tries to draw current past a certain level.

I will check the +/- connections and will also start disconnecting speakers. hopefully something shows up soon, but like i said it seems to happen so intermittently. i can go days with out a issue then all of a sudden it might happen several times right in a row

fingers crossed
thanks

I had a strange problem wiht my old car.

I would be driving down the road and on hot days when I went over a bump, my left woofer would cut out.

I ended up finding out that my crappy edead V2se was not sticking very well in warm weather. the aluminized backing was barely touching my speaker connections and causing them to short.

The connections at the amp should be easy to hunt down.

The connections else where mean a little more tear down.

Hi all

go figure.... I start to look into why things are not working right, and then everything starts to work.

I have drove all over the last few days and the radio has not cut out once. Maybe it will never happen again........
