hey im looking into doing a single 12" sub for my mach 460 system in my 04 mustang. a local speed and sound shop wants like 160$ for a JL 12w1 sub, 70$ for a sealed box, $250 for a true 500watt amp, and a couple hundred for installation. that seems a little rich for me so i was wondering if bestbuy has good audio and reliable installation? anyone ever buy from them? what is the best set up in you opinion?

I def would NOT buy a best buy sound system. over priced and installs are not great. they train their techs for 15 days and then set them loose on ur car. Not who i want to be installing on my car...
they are no different then any shop other then the sheer number of install bays and installers. At ANY shop you have the possibility of a hack installer that has no clue how to spell the name of your car let alone take it apart, and put it back together. They have alot of mecp master certified installers working there, and they have some idiots as well. I would invite you to take a walk back to the install bay of ANY shop you are considering and maybe say hello to the installer. Once that it done it should be an easy answer to the question of "do I trust my car to these people?"
Also ask around and see what people say, a reputable shop will have a good name that people know....
the reputable shop near me is the only shop near me and their prices are CRAZY! im in reisterstown maryland but will be getting it done at the closest bestbuy which is in owingsmills. i went in tonight actually and got a rough quote of 120 bucks for the install. iv got all the component picked out. kicker 300tru watts amp, rockford fostgate punch 400 watt 12" sub. i dont have a link for the amp cuz im buying it private sale. but here is the sub... http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Rockford...&skuId=8761271

yeah I tried the "cheap" bestbuy route... when they got done with my car, only the back 2 speakers were wired up to the head unit I had them put in for me. I asked them why the didn't hook up the front 2 speakers and tweeters. They told me it was b/c my car needed a 2nd harness for the head unit and they didn't have that harness and I could drive 35 miles to get the harness that would cost me about 50 bucks from this specialty store. I took it to the local guy I had do my previous audio and he did it right. It cost me a little more, but the local guys usually have better stuff and do a better job. You get what ya pay for. JL makes awesome stuff btw, that's the sub I've been running for 5 years w/ no problems.
the quality that jl charges for is not something you will see on the outside. Those things are tanks and will last for a long long time which is worth the money
