i've used a few amps in my system and what i found works for me is a infinity mono block for my subs and a eclipse 4 channel for the interior, they are very reliable (on for hours turned up) and don't over heat. I would suggest a INFINITY REF5350A 60 watts RMS x 4 channels with a 300 watt RMS 5th channel to add a little bit of sub to it. you can put up to a 6 volt input signal in and it can go from 10Hz to 100kHz including three electronic crossovers.

The problem with used amps is you never know how they've been cared for. It's kinda a gamble buying used electronics like that. They're cheap, but no guarantees how long it will last. I needed a cheap amp for the speakers in my Subaru until I could afford a good 4 channel amp and went with this 4 channel Sony Xplod from Wal Mart for $100. Sony car audio stuff is far from what I'd consider quality equipment but I've been running it for about 7 months and pushed it pretty hard and it's still going just fine. There's no buzzing or amp noise and no problems that I have noticed so far. I've got it under the passenger's seat and the hottest I've gotten it with a proper ground was around 120 after pounding on it for about 2 hours. It seems to be a decent budget amp, if I were to do it again I'd save up a bit more and buy a Rockford or Alpine but I can't argue with an amp that works!

Here are the amps I was looking at for the Suby if I ever get around to replacing that Sony:

Only better speakers can do that...
Not really true... additional clean power reduces distortion at higher volume levels in a major way. Especially if we're comparing stock power to a decent aftermarket amp. Additionally, most amps have high pass filters which can really help a set of door speakers out, too. Adding a sub without high-pass filtering the main speakers is like kissing your sister.

I've done many systems with stock speakers and upgraded amplifiers and the results are surprisingly good.

^ +1 my stock mach 460 system sounded good but once some a$$ hole mechanic fried my factory amps (got water in it) i upgraded to a nice 4 channel and the sound coming from the factory speakers sounded way better.
