Default Radio static

Im tryin to fix my grandmothers radio in her 1999 Dodge Ram 1500. Its a stock radio, my unmechanicaly inclined step father replaced the antenna with a universal one and messed up the wiring of the radio. I got all the wiring fixed but now there is straight static on AM stations and broken static with some radio chatter on FM stations. Could something be wrong with the radio or the antenna. I looked around under the dash for bare wires and make sure nothing was around the antenna wire and found nothing. Im alil lost, thanks for the help guys.
