Bullitts came with 3.27 gears. No other ratios were available.

Bullitt's came with 3.27's, Mach 1's had 3.55's from the factory.

The joke was that the Mach 1's used some Bullitt parts and the Cobra engine. But that the gears helped the Mach 1 more than the engine.

When a 3.73 Bullitt would race a stock 3.55 Mach 1 it was a very close race.

I seriously doubt that 0.18 bump in gear ratio makes anywhere near the difference that the 4V heads make. I'd take a stock 3.55 Mach1 against an otherwise stock Bullitt with 3.73's every time (and I own a Bullitt).

The Bullitt was designed to have a 6,500 RPM redline, with 3.73's, making 315 hp. 2 problems came up. EPA standards, and it would have been faster than the 2001 Cobra.

So Ford gave us a listed 5,800 RPM redline (that really goes to 6,200 RPM's), with 3.27's and 305 HP. Still the fastest GT or 2V for its time.

Two area's that hurt the Bullitt are the crappy factory tires and the gears.

In tests Mach 1's have run from 14.0 to 13.5 stock from what I recall. Bullitt's ran about 13.7 or less. I know a few stock Bullitt's that did 13.4's

Granted the Mach 1's did have auto's but IMHO if you raced a Mach 1 with 3.55's and a Bullitt with 3.73, it would be a drivers race.

P.S. I might have given the Bullitt TQ numbers in my above post. Even so, a 265 HP 2V can stay on the heels of a 305 HP DOHC w/3.55's.

I would say yes, 3.73's on a Bullitt and it is a drivers race with a Mach 1, auto or stick.

I think the Bullitt was Fords best kept secret when it came out and 99% of people thought it was just a GT with a silver fuel cap and red brakes.

I agree with you that many people dismiss the Bullitt as a GT with a few cosmetic changes. I also think guys don't think any deeper than the 265hp rating for the Bullitt (area under the curve is much improved with the Bullitt vs the GT). Plus a stock Bullitt has proven to put out consistently 275hp in stock trim. However, I think the trap speeds on the magazine track tests are telling data. The mph of the Mach1 is at leat 3mph faster, which is significant in terms of power to weight ratio. I also agree that the drivers can more than make a half second difference in ETs, so it is not out of the question for a Bullitt to beat a Mach1 at the track in stock trim.

I have had 3.27, 3.73, and 4.10 gears in my car so I have a pretty good idea of how much difference different ratios can make in acceleration. Given the same driver, I am certain that a Mach1 with 3.55 gears will beat a Bullitt with 3.73 gears. A Mach1 with 3.73 gears would certainly beat a Bullitt with 3.73 gears.

I'm not trying to argue that a Bullitt is a slouch, just that the 4V has a distict advantage over the 2V. I REALLY like my Bullitt!!!

I agree a Mach 1 with 3.73's will beat a Bullitt.

I think its a drivers race when Bullitt has 3.73 and the Mach 1 has stock 3.55's.

I would love to see some 1/8 mile and 1/4 mile times for Bullitts vs Mach 1's with only gear changes.

There is data out there on each if you search enough. Be careful to adjust all data for DA to get the best apples to apples comparison. Tires and track prep are two variables that will be impossible to compensate for.

The 4V is likely to respond even better to gears than the 2V.

A lot of data exists for the Bullitt on the IMBOC website. I am not sure where a good source for Mach1 data resides.
