Charles Boyd Black, Jr. MOUNT HOLLY - Charles Boyd Black, Jr., 91, of 235 Cedar Lane, passed away on Monday, February 2, 2015, at his home. He was born in Mount Holly, NC, son of the late Charles Boyd Black, Sr. and Ruth Preston Gowan Black. He is survived by his wife of 69 years Frances Wiggins Black; four children Ruth Ann Dalton and husband Charles of Gastonia, Steven M. Black and wife Rhonda of Charlotte, Christy B. Cook and husband Tony of Denver, and Charles David Black of Charlotte; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was a US Army Air Corps Veteran of WWII and Korea. He was a member of the 8th Army Air Corps 392nd Bomb Group 578 Bomb Squadron. He flew 26 combat missions in a B-24 Liberator as a Radio Operator. He was stationed in England. He was awarded four air medals; Good Conduct Ribbon, Europe - African - Middle East Medal with Three Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Victory Medal for WWII. He also was awarded the National Defense Ribbon. He was a charter member of the North Carolina Air National Guard at Charlotte where he served as a Communications Chief until he was recalled to the United States Air Force for the Korean Conflict. He was a charter member of the Mount Holly VFW #9136. He was a charter member of the 8th Air Force Historical Society Metrolina Wing where he served as Commander twice. He was employed with the Federal Aviation Administration in Charlotte from 1960 - 1983. He was the chairmen of the Transportation Advisory Committee for the local area for more than 18 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mount Holly where he served as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher. He served on the Mount Holly City Council for eight and a half years from 1970 -1978 and served as Mayor of Mount Holly for 16 years from 1978 - 1994. He was the Mount Holly Man of the Year in 2006. Mr. Black help start the Mount Holly Spring Festival. A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Black will be held 1:00 pm Wednesday, February 4, 2015, at the First Baptist Church in Mount Holly with Rev. Dr. Kendell Cameron and Rev. Dr. Robert Winecoff officiating. Burial will follow at Pineview Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00pm Tuesday night at First Baptist Church in Mount Holly and also one hour prior to the service on Wednesday. I want to thank everyone for all the prayers and support. The doctors were hoping the tumor would shrink 20-25% so they could do the surgery. Well, it shrunk 90%!!!! She will see the surgeon in the next few days to schedule the surgery. So frick'n happy right now.
