I thought the same thing the first time I saw it... it seems like a stupid way to brace the front end to the cowl, but it is stock so I'm guessing some Ford engineer thought it would be a good idea.

Here is what mine began life as and was for the last 15 years I have had it. It wasn't drivable for the last 10 years.

This was the rebuilt 200 and freshened up engine bay right after we got the car.



Here it is now with its new 302!
