Why the hell do "Rally Pac" tach/clocks cost so much? Favorite tach alternatives?

Interesting about the repop. I will look.

Concerning saving up, I agree, it is sort of inevitable that I will buy a fancy repop (300-400) at some point.

Im curious if they are ever stolen at car shows etc being that they cost so much.

I thought about the Shelby tachs, but they aren't any cheaper.

I have this tach, because it has a classic look to it. I also made it light up green instead of white like most aftermarket tachs. That way it matches the other illumination.

WOW! that looks like it belongs in a classic!

as for another tach idea, ive see something thats very interesting, the guy took a 3" exhaust tubing, or whatever side the body of the tach wood fit in, and he had a 90* angle in it that was then welded to the dash, looked really once it was done, completely custom.

i really like the green line gauges i beleive there called. look very period correct and very nice, although they are very expensive

Get one of these...

...and add your own small tach, oil pressure gauge, or whatever combo of gauges you want.

The rally pac was a $70 option back in 1965, so relative to the cost of the car then and now, they are actually much cheaper now.

FWIW, I've had original rally pacs, both '65 and '66 style. The Ford licensed rally pac made by Oval Industries (if I am remembering the name right) is about as good a reproduction of any Mustang part out there. It is a nice piece and wires just like the original (i.e. current driven tach).

Holy crap, $70!?!?!? Amazing.

That year one option is very tempting. Thanks.

Thought you guys might enjoy this. Found this tach in my garage when I was clearing it out for my Mustang. Behind the rear casing it says 1966. Found a horrible condition one on ebay for $350, plus there was another auction for just the mounting stand for $100. I'm definitely saving this one.

I haven't seen a Rally Pac for under $100 since about 1980, and of course $100 is worth about $275 in today's $. That $70 option in 66 would be about $475 in todays $. Hmmm, the repro sells for less than that.

Until the repro Rally Pac came out a few years ago, a well-restored Rally Pac typically sold for $1000. I saw a few NOS Pac's go for $1200-$1400.

Now we have repros, not too bad at that. Price? Think about this- the bezel and housing are metal die-cast. The tooling for just the housing probably cost between $50,000 and $75,000. Then they had to have special tachs and clocks done up. If they tried to sell them for $100, they'd have to sell somewhere north of 5000 before they broke even, let alone make a profit. Before anyone sneezes at "profit", remember these people are not supported by D.C. bailouts, so the only reason they are able to exist and provide us parts for our big toys is that profit.

MU sells the bare, unpainted housing for $225. There are a couple of ratty early style Pac's on eBay now for $175-$200. The repro low-profile type, for 65-66 5-gauge cluster, starts at about $400.

The early style, for the big rectangular speedo, typically sells for nearly $500, although I did see one for a but under $400.
