I'll just be annoying by saying if you do swap the hoses, you might want to take the time and check to see if you need a coolant flush after a little while. Who knows what could come dislodged from an old heater core when you reverse the flow after 40 years.

What the hell...

Factory installed hoses aren't crossed. If his or anyone else's is, the were reinstalled that way. The heater will work both ways.
