thanks for all the input guys, JMD, if I was closer to you I might take you up on your lincoln welder.

What do you think of a 220V lincoln, w/ half full gas tank, custom cart, and 1 year of use for $550? Thats one semi-local ad, is that a good price or should we get it cheaper?

I'd expect better performance than that. One rule of thumb is 0.001" metal thickness per amp.
14ga metal is ≈0.083" . . .

I did expect more, unfortunatly while I had done a lot of stick welding prior to my purchase of the Lincoln, I had only used a cheesy little mig just for a couple of welds years prior to my purchase of the Lincoln. Having nothing to judge the Lincoln against, it looks like I might have missed the fact that it was not working right...

LOL,,, well, it looks like the welder is broken anyway..... Figures right?

The price for the used one seems a little bit high to me...

You would still need a bottle, but they are not that much.

that is a good price. I paid that for my 110 machine and had to build my own cart.

I said the bottle is included and has 50% of the gas left in it...

So if that makes it worth it then my dad might go pick it up...

the gas level isn't really relevant. It will take a while for you to burn up half a tank of gas. The gas isn't really that expensive. The bottle is what costs money. When you run out of gas you take it in and exchange it for a new tank so all you are paying for is the gas.

Sorry, I meant the ones in the ebay link....

I probably have used 10 to 15 bottles of gas in the past few months..

Funny thing is I have no idea how much a bottle of co2 or (co2/argon for TIG) costs because I ALWAYS sent my son...

Didn't much matter because I didn't have a choice....

The bottle is probably worth about $50 or $80 depending on it's size.

Half a bottle of gas I guestimate to be worth about $10, Half the full PRESSURE is less than 1/2 a bottle though..

The bottom half of the pressure goes pretty fast.

It probably wouldn't hurt to check how well the various electrical connections were made and have held up, and there may be other DIY checks that you can do. I imagine that you could check open-circuit voltage and whether it's DC or not.

I also wonder if the drive wheels have been contaminated or perhaps aren't right for the wire diameter.

It costs me $13 to fill my bottle with Co2/Argon mix, its the medium sized bottle not a big one.

$550 for a 22v welder that is only a year old, that is a good deal. Paid that for my 110 Hobart 6 years ago.
