Default Putting the Controversy to Bed, 289 302 Blocks Are The Same..

I figure that 289 and 302 blocks are for all intents and purposes the same, but people have been debating this point way before Al Gore invented the Internet, it is time to lay this issue to rest.

There are some folks who say that 289 and 302 blocks are the same except that 302 cylinders are .020 LONGER than 289 bores.

Some people say that this is really not true and that any differences in cylinder length are pretty much coincidental and the .020" difference is within casting tolerance anyway.

I say that even IF 302 cylinders are .020" longer, (this is 2/10 of 1/10th"), as a PRACTICAL MATTER, it won't make a damn bit of difference ANYWAY.

I want to suppose that the "difference in blocks" was created by a parts MARKETING guy intent on selling more blocks, (you know you need to stock both 289 and 302 blocks) I think that it was the same guy who recommended changing coolant for antifreeze in the winter, and antifreeze for coolant in the summer....

I think it might be considered an "open question" as to whether the bores are .020" longer, (although I discount this), but I think that beyond a doubt, it does not matter AT ALL.

I am sure EVERYONE here is so enlightened to agree with me right....

Does this mean I can stop changing my coolant every winter?

Yeah, but you still have to put winter air in the tires before the weather gets cold. You can get that done at the tire shop, about $10 each.

yeah, it's a good idea to change it and might want to check your blinker fluid level while you're at it.

I just had that done last week in my '99 GT, I got charged almost $200 at the local Ford dealer ship.
Did I get hosed, or was that a good price???

I think I need to change my muffler bearings, my exhaust is really loud

as for 289/302, I can assume they are the same considering ford build 302's in 68 with leftover 289 blocks.... but for some I guess that's too good of a reason to be true

Make sure you use a left-handed wheel puller or you will get a backflow of exhaust into the radiator.

That's all fine and dandy, but where does the 5.0L fit in?
