Go With Your True Motivation
[QUOTE=clay lewis;6347388] I'm not going to want to putt around in a pokey 6 cylinder w/ no a/c, an AM radio or power anything. I would probably just sell it to someone who could appreciate it more than me.
I'll answer your question with a question. Why would you go and get this great deal on a 69 fastback, dream of doing some real cool things to it then turn around and sell it to someone who might appreciate it more then you do the way it is? What was your orginal motivation in up picking this awesome car up? Stay with your dream.
I wouldn't worry much about destroying history. The are a few out there that keep those old six bangers running and they can hold the place in history. You now have the chance to do something to a cool old car, that if done right, will only inhance it's value. I really believe you can make this car worth more as a restomod then it will ever be left alone. The key here again is doing it right. There are lots of dudes that would no doubt take it off your hands in a hearbeat. I don't think you would find many that would leave it the way it is!!!!! I just noticed there is an outfit producing 67 & 68 Fastback bodies brand new. They sell for about 15000.00 just the body!!! I think a 69 "Sports Roof" is just as cool and you have one.

I would go restomod in a heartbeat and I did, twice. My 1965 Ranchero has a '87 GT engine with the AOD. I can sit it up for months and it will start right up. That's the beauty of a more modern fuel injection engine vs a dopey old school carburetor. My other restomod is a 1964 Falcon conv that was a six also. As has been said, modernizing it has only improved the value. It sports a '95 GT engine with the AOD, rack and pinion steering with Mustang II IFS and many more upgrades. Wouldn't trade it for 2 six cyl cars.
No offense to those that prefer originals though, but a 289 '65 is a lot more desirable original than a '69 six.

A fastback/sportroof and convertible are worth the same inline 6 and small block. You could do the bolt on rule so later on you can put it back to factory if you like. Its your car do whatever you want that makes you happy.

Sell it to me and watch it get a 351C, 9" rear, and 5 lug front disc brakes. Or you can do it yourself, but if you want to stay with gasoline, maybe the 6 will be thrifty and you can enjoy driving it even if it isnt a 10 second street terror. The price of gas is going up again, how long before it costs too much to drive anything that isnt EFI with a 1.8L?
