Oh, the horror of the death wail!!! And then it puked up it's guts in the end! Couldn't they just shoot it?
How come there aren't any Asian or European cars on the list?
Because people think American cars are junk, even though Asian and European cars are quite similar in reliability and function to US vehicles. The cost of fixing an import however is quite a bit higher in most instances.
It is a stupid program with no positive product to come from it. Most cars being sold through this program are Asian makes, and it was intended to help out the US automakers and get the US to use less fuel. Seems to fail a bit. The scary part is this was the voluntary part, what happens if the decide if it is no longer voluntary and they start scrapping everything built between 84 and 04 forcing people to buy a new car rather than drive a cheap efficient beater?
All this program is doing is wiping out cars that people like me on a very tight budget with limited income could afford. There is no way I can afford a new car, even with the $4500 credit, it just isnt going to happen. I can however afford a $500-$2500 car or truck, the problem is those are getting scrapped. That Volvo in the video looks damn nice, it must get crappy mileage to be accepted for this program.
CFC is just another attempt to drag out the inevitable economy model change from consume everything at an ever increasing rate, to something more sane.

I agree. Why is the Volvo on youtube considered a clunker, its not that old and its not a gas guzzler either. If they are just going to destroy it, I sure wouldn't mind driving it, looks like a nice car.
The reason that your 85 isn't applicable is because they have probably done what they did to many others. They raised the fuel economy so it wouldn't be, because they are running out of funds for the program.
The way this administration thinks, there is probably a clause in the bill that says that.

I have a 94 F150 with the 4.9 and I am lucky to get 14MPG and it is fuel injected. They are good strong dependable motors.
It doesn't make sense to me that they destroyed the volvo either. It was a nicer looking car than anything that I have in my driveway.

I think the program is a crock of ****!
It's not a crock...it's more of the gov take over. Look up the number 1 vehicle sold. You will find a Ford....(escort?). Look who is getting all of them. Your friendly U.S.P.S. is sucking them up by the thousands....and they aren't costing the post office anything.

That list is far from factual. Maybe it's regionally specific, but no one in MI is trading in their explorer, with the winters here like they are, no one here is getting rid of them. I'm taking mostly old GM trucks, and old big Crown Vics and Grand Marquis. My dealership has done 200 Clunker deals, and I think we've taken in 2 total explorers.

Probably does vary by region. I picked that off a Yahoo news link but I don't remember the source of the list. Around here, minivans are big. You can see them parked out back behind the dealerships.
As far as an economic shot, do you think the 200 your dealership has done is over and above what they would have done without the program? Seems like it would have to be. Any guesses as to how many of the 200 would have bought a car anyway? To me, it looks like the program is selling inventory, giving a bit a the stimulus money to the taxpayers, and making a dent (however small) in the amount of gas we use.
As far as depriving people of used cars they can afford, I think there are still plenty of them out there.
How come the cars they are destroying are in better shape than my daily driver f150 with a 351 and my wifes saturn with 246k miles.
I dont even like volvos but that was disgusting. I am organizing a NEW PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Automobiles).
Better buy some engine blocks up before they disappear completely.

We have to do a survey after each sale; would you have bought a new car if not for the program, when, new or used, etc. Problem is, the stats on the program are skewed; we had people holding off all of july until the program, so people that were going to buy anyway held off, and people that otherwise wouldnt have bought, did. So it wasn't SUCH a big hit as the paper said, because all of july was pretty dry until the program hit.
