eBay rust disaster... new 1970 Mach I in the family...
So, as a child, I remember a great deal of time spent in my aunt's canary yellow and black 70 Mach I. She wasn't my aunt yet - she was my uncle's gf... and as many people did in the mid-70's, they fell on hard times after they got married and he forced her to sell her Mustang. (In all fairness, he sold his 73 Mach I too)
All these years later, he still felt guilty for that, making her sell hers, and she wanted another one, etc, etc, you guys know the tale - and they buy one off eBay.
Annnnd find out after they take delivery that was stored for 15 years in a collapsed barn in coastal Alabama.
The rust is extensive.
Extensive.
Dismayed and stuck with the car, they brought it home. My brother, the body shop owner and paint wizard, gave them a pep talk, and told them exactly what I did this evening: You got a LONG way to go, but its not insurmountable. My uncle is feeling horribly overwhelmed, despite his knowledge of Mustangs and Ford cars in general. I suggested they address the most critical things first, frame, floor, etc. Take things in bites. Also suggested they find a name for it and just imagine themselves giving a classic Mustang on its last gasp a second chance at life.
I promised them I'd ask around about reputable places to buy new sheet metal, and they're going to need a lot. As in quarter panels front and back, floor pans, even frame components. He can do a lot of welding and fabricating of some parts, but yeah... they need all the help they can get... They are internet savvy(ish) and I did suggest a few sites, Virginia Classic Mustang being one of them.
Anyone else have any suggestions?

i use mustangsunlimited.com
great guys, fast shipping, fair prices.
remember, most parts places will have the same parts as they are not made by the companies, they companies just sell them, prettymuch all the same stuff

NPD is close to me so most of my parts came from there. It's nice to be able to go to a parts supplier that has parts in stock, look at it before you buy. Never had a problem with them that they didn't take care of.
HOLY CRAP! For a moment, I thought you'd hacked my uncle's computer and ripped off some of his pix! LOL
Yeah, its about like that. He's supposed to email me the pix they took yesterday as they were starting to tear it down, so I'll get them posted asap. And while its PURELY conjecture, the car was packed front to back, top to bottom with bags of old clothes... our thought is said rags got soaked somehow, possibly with salt water from Katrina or one of the other hurricanes, and the shut-up car turned into a moisture box. It even smells like moldy wet clothes, and that's with its interior gutted.
Did I mention it had gold shag carpet (residential kind?) instead of auto carpet?
Anywho... I'm trying to get him, my aunt, and my dad to be members here. The first two could benefit a LOT from you guys' wisdom, experience and support (Or lack thereof in some cases ) and my dad wants another Mustang (1st Gen or 05-09ish) so badly he can't see straight. I volunteered the Cherry Bomb (my 06 GT) to be available to him and my mom any time they ever want it - its like using nicotine gum instead of lighting up a nice Cuban cigar (doesn't quite scratch the itch) but it helps and I figure I owe them that much considering well... they're mom and dad.
I didn't see any thoughts on rust converters... anyone know anything about them? If they work, its one of those things that might could used in limited places where rust isn't a threat to the structural integrity of the car, won't be seen, but needs to be stopped to keep from spreading around like the cancer it is.
