Default 351 in a 67?

Will a 351 fit in a stock 67 engine bay? Is there a difference in size between a
Cleveland 351 and a Windsor 351(as in the new Boss 351 by FRP)? Sorry if these seem like stupid questions, but I am interested in putting a 351 in a 67 Coupe.

Either will fit, but both will need conversion headers.

And yes, there is a difference in size, mostly in the heads. But, iirc, cleve exhaust ports face slightly downward, so it's not as much of a problem as it could be.

conversion headers? Where do you get them? JBA, Hooker, Headman? I've thought of putting a 331 in but wondering if the power difference with the 351 is worth the issues of putting the 351 in?

Whoa hold on......I thought the 351 Windsor was the easiest drop in 351 for a 67??????

No need for conversion headers with a 351C. I used 71-73 2V headers in the Cougar, they would even clear the power steering. Not entirely sure about a clutch though, that might take a different set. I would assume that you could use headers for a 69 that had a Windsor, since they are pretty darn close to the same size. 390s, 427s and 428s fit in the 67/68 so why wouldnt a 351 fit real easy?

Plenty of room under there..

Easy to reach the bolts too!

Stuff it in and have fun. Keep in mind that if you have an automatic, you might need a larger bellhousing for it because the 351s used the larger of the two flexplates.

So it sounds fairly straight forward! Any other problems than bellhousing?

God help you if you ever have to change a spark plug LOL!

So let me ask you guys this....is the Cleveland the better choice for a 351 conversion or the Windsor?

I have thick wide hands and I can reach the plugs ok, if the engine is hot I wont stick my hand in there, but otherwise no problem.

As to what is better, that is left to what you either have, can find, or can get cheap. There is a Cougar salvage yard in OR or WA that will sell you a Cleveland core for dirt cheap, if you pull it. You can get a Windsor pretty much anywhere, but to make decent power with the W you pretty much need aftermarket heads and a better intake. The Cleveland needs a cam with the matching valvetrain upgrades including new valves, and a set of headers. The 2v needs an intake for a 4 barrel carb and with the 4v its optional.

Whatever you can find, go with that. I have 5 Clevelands and one Windsor but the W is cracked.

I am looking at the new Boss 351W block. It has some upgrades from the original Windsor. I am not a engine guy but just been reading the FRP technicals on the Boss 351. I do plan to use aftermarket heads, roller cam, roller lifters, etc. I am only concerned because I have been planning the 302 Stroker and know some about the different parts available for it, but not anything to speak of for the 351. I don't want to get 1/2 way through the 351 build and find that it's not going to work as easy as the 302 build and install will be. Thanks for any suggestions or comments.

So are you saying the C does not require heads, just a valvetrain upgrade????

Engines are cheap here....I have a 351W with 69,000 miles on it sitting in my shop that I bought for $150. I also have good running Cleveland that I just pulled for $80. Both will be torn down and rebuilt regardless but as for which one will be dropped into the pony I have not decided yet.

I see plenty of aftermarket stuff for the W but not for the C?
I also understood that the W will drop right into the engine mounts in the pony bay with no mods.

I was going to go with moderate performance upgrades (including roller valvetrain) but focusing more on weight reduction. Lightening the block casting, adding aluminum heads, oil pan, and intake, etc. This was the plan for the W.....

If the C doesn't need heads then thats a pretty decent savings....
I'm making my own headers from stainless either way....

Being that I have both what would be the best choice?
