First, are you using a stock replacement long-style clutch, the type with 3 fingers in the middle? Or are you using a modern diaphragm-style clutch, with a bunch of fingers in the middle? If you're using the latter, leave the spring out.
If you need to reinstall the spring, disconnect the linkage, push the pedal down, remove the pedal stop bushing, and pull the pedal back up. You should be able to work the spring onto the pedal. Once it's reinstalled, push the pedal down and replace the stop bushing. Pull it back up and reconnect the linkage.
