How much do i need to pay for a paint job.

how fast you want it?
how good you want it?
paint jobs are not binary instead they follow a smooth continuum ranging from cheap paint sprayed over bugs and mud on an unprepared surface (50 footers) to SEMA grade sub inch quality.
if you want something decent I suspect 2000 to 2500 should get you something you would be happy with but again thats based on expectations.

Paint has such a wide range of pricing and quality. People's eye also has a very large range. It really is something that you need to spend the time looking at places work, materials and prices.
There are plenty of places that will shoot your car in single stage paint for $2K. There are other places where the materials alone for a base coat / clear coat would be more than $2K, and you are probably looking closer to $5-$8K for a finished job.
It really depends on what you want and what you are willing to spend and finding the right fit for you and the car.

As for pricing a paint job I'd think its just common sense you'll get what you pay for as long as your not screwed by the shop. A very simple basic low cost paint job will cost 2k to 3k. That's for very very very little body work! This is also a job that in 5 years will likely need to be done again because the paint has faded due to low quality paint, lots of noticeable scratches due to a very thin coat of base and only 1 or maybe 2 thin coats of clear, etc.
Quality paint, quality workmanship and a quality job will cost you more. How much more depends on your ideal of what quality is and/or your financial decisions.

Lane since I live in Alabama if you're anywhere near Birmingham I have a great place that focuses primarily on mustangs. They do some of the best work and have had cars in both Magazines (One this month in Mustang Monthly) and at SEMA. I have my car there and if you want I know you can have them look at it and get a very decent price. They do great work and are not as pricey. It is only a two person shop so speed is not where it's at with them. They can be fast but if you let them take there time you can win car shows and more.
If you want more information PM me or post here I don't mind sharing info on them on the forums.
