302 swap in 1965 Mustang-pulley questions!!!! HELP
I am swapping a 1965 Mustang over to a 302.
I understand that I must do a suspension swap as well, that is not what I am concerned with at this point.
The 289 has a 3 bolt crank pulley while the 302 has a 4 bolt. I understand that the offset of a 302 crank is different from that of a 289 crank.
I am getting help from a friend who has done a 302 swap before, and he says that I can still use my stock 302 crank pulley, But that I must have a water pump pulley from a 1967-1968 mustang with a/c
I guess that I just need help knowing what is going on here. I just want to know where I can get the correct water pump pulley so that I can start enjoying my new engine swap!
To clarify the situation, I just want to confirm that I only want to run the alternator and water pump. Three pulleys total. No Power steering, No A/C.
Thanks for putting up with the new guy!

Depending on the year of the 302, (I want to say pre 85 but not 100%) you can run ALL of your 289 stuff including the balancer.
For late 302s, (I want to say 85 AND LATER) you can use all of your 289 stuff except for the balancer, provided you get the right balancer.
The balance is different on late 302s, 289 and early 302s are 28 oz late 302s 5.0s are 50 oz.
Suspension will be ok too.

I'm sorry,
I think that I failed to mention that I am going from a 200 inline six over to an 8.
So, what you are saying is that a 289 balancer and all pulleys will interchange directly with a 302 crank? (pre 82 of course)
Thanks again!

Yes they will...If you aren't running any accesories other than the alternator it shouldn't be hard to match stuff up..You can easily shim the alternator in or out by cutting the long aluminium spacer or by adding washers depending on what you need to do...Use the same year crank and waterpump pulleys and you should be all set..From 1970-78 the waterpump changed to drivers side outlet and the pulley depths changed as well...Add in the 4 bolt harmonic balancer and things get very confusing when trying to interchange these parts from different years..

i used all my 289 front accessories (1966) with the 302 (1972), just needed to change the crank pulley (3bot/4bolt) ... pretty straight forward. I'd just get a 4bolt, put it in and see how everything lines up

i need help please 3 to 4 bolt pulley 65 mustang
Hi,
I have 65 mustang coupe. I have a 87 302 im using the current 65 alt, water pump. my harm is worn out and i noticed that it was a 65 harm per the part number. came that way when i bought the car. But if im correct i need to put an 87 Harm on and go to a 4 bolt groove crank pully correct? i already had to move the dip stick from the side to the front because the guy before me did not know what he was doing i guess. But this is the last item for the rebuilt 302. and i wanted to make sure i got the correct harm for the motor. Any advice would help please. im a little slow at understanding things so please bear with me for my issues. I took a IED blast last year and well lost the left eye broke the neck and back and brain damage as well. so my critcal thinking skills and short term mem are a issue on top of my spelling. my engeering deg is worth less now. But please any help with this issue would be huge for me before i drop some cash on it.
