Late 302 in 65 Mustang Pulley Issues!
Hi,
I am new to the forums today. I purchased a 65 Mustang that has a '76 302 in it. It had a right dump water pump on it which resulted in the PO running a god awful radiator hose down and around to hook up to the radiator. I swapped the water pump out for a left dump 289 pump. That is when the problems started. Now the water pump pulley doesn't fit. I thought I would just buy a 289 water pump pulley and matching crank pulley. However, the crank pulley in mine is a 4 bolt and the '65 289 pulleys are 3 bolt. Do I need to swap out the balancer from the 289 as well?
I don't want to keep buying pulleys if nothing is going to work!
Thanks in advance for your help!
Drew

i dont know if this will help, but my car now has a 351w and when it came to pulleys i used the crank pulley off of my 69 302, bought a new balancer (3 bolt i believe) and a passenger side inlet water pump for a 289 and when it came to the water pump pulley i used a water pump pulley off of a 5.0 out of a fox body and every thing lines up and works great, but from what i know you should not use a 289 balancer on a 302, you might have to keep throwing pulleys at it, sometimes when nothing works i buy what ever i can get my hands on and what ever doesnt work i send back, hope this helps, good luck

You main problem TMK is that the wp that dump on opposite sides can also be reverse flow depending on year and the snout can be at different heights. I believe 70+? 302's came with drivers side dump and 4 bolt harmonic balancers. I'd have to look up and see what wt. balancer a '76 crank used 28 or 50oz. They have to match the wt. of the flywheel and be for that crank.
First off I'd verify the year of your block, you can find the casting number by removing the starter and cleaning off the rear corner of the block where the oilpan meets the ridge (i'll post a pic later) then we can start figuring out what year water pumps fit with correct rotation and exit side and what wt. balancer/flywheel you should have and then match up a 3 or 4 hole pulley as required or if you will need to change balancer. Most aftermarket balancers take a 3 or 4 hole pulley (drilled for both) but again you'll need to know what wt.
