Default '68 GT Rebuild -or- Progress Finally !

Some of you may be familiar with the '67 project that I started (see " '67 Project Underway" thread on this forum - https://mustangforums.com/forum/clas...-underway.html). I pulled the 289 out of that car but did not complete all of the metal work replacement (floor pans, frame rails, torque box, and more) that would have been required to get the car in good running condition.

In the meantime, however, I got the 289 and C-4 from that car rebuilt (they have been sitting in my mechanic's shop for more than a year) and found a decent '68 GT (see same thread for some pics) that I thought had the original 302 (it's a San Jose J-code car).

Upon further review, however, it turns out that that GT had a 302 from 1972. Other than a little floor pan rust, this car is in pretty good shape.

So, the seats needed replacing and I had some stuff ready to go from the '67. (You can see where this is going . . .). Sitting here looking at this rusted hulk of a '67 sitting next to this clean '68 GT with a tired 302 that is not original, and wondering when my mechanic was going to ask me, "When are you going to get that motor and tranny out of here ??", it all started to make sense ! !

So that brings us to today. Below are some pics of where I started with this car and where I am now. Hopefully I'll get this bad boy running within a few weeks. I really need a new wiring harness but haven't scraped up the scratch to get that one ordered and will just use the existing for now.

Anyhow, enjoy the pics !

Get out them sunglasses for this next one:

Looks great. That will be a nice ride when that motor is up and running.

Thanks GT350. That old 302 was nasty but still ran. Cleaning up that engine bay was quite a bit of work too - sandblasted the whole thing.

I finally confirmed that the car has a 9" rear end which is cool.

I'd eventually like to put a 428 in this car and make it a R-code clone but this 289 will do for now !

Haven't gotten much feedback on my project, and yes, I know, I had the carb on backwards when I took these pics.

I'm working on all the brackets and such for the alternator and power steering, as well as the under-hood wiring harness and radiator and heater hoses. Maybe by this weekend, I'll be ready to fire up this bad boy up !

Hmmm, maybe I'm in the wrong forum . . .

Think I'd have done the same thing. Always good to have a Mustang to drive.

So I'm getting it together slowly but surely - everything from heater hoses to power steering to throttle linkages to solenoids - and it's a long process but I hope to have this car back in the shop early next week because they want to fire her up because they built her.

I'll try to post the video once we "put the spark to 'er" ! !

Started the rebuilt 289 the other day at the shop. Sounds BAD *** with the headers only.

Still have a few things to do to make it "streetable" but it's on its way ! !
