Default 1970 MACH 1 dash VIN Tag

Looking at buying a 1970 MACH 1 that claims all original w/ matching #'s. However, the VIN tag in dash looks like a loose piece of metal that was placed at base of windshield. Owner claims it was this way when he bought car 4 years ago and dosen't know why iot is like that.

Does the original VIN tag get disrupted when the windshield or dash pad is replaced? Just trying to figure out why the tag looks placed in. Do not see any cutout on dash pad either where VIN tag would go.

Thanks,

Bill H.

here is a pic of the VIN tag on my 69 (no dashpad installed). it's just a floppy piece of metal riveted to the cowl.

the VIN is also stamped on both shock towers. the problem is it's underneath the fenders (at least on mine it was).

What about the door tag, does it match the vin?
Numbers matching is more of a chevy thing IIRC. The motor and tranny are not marked on fords with a matching number except maybe the year.

this is my 69 351W. the engine is stamped and matches the VIN.

numbers matching isn't just a chevy thing. i thought they started stamping all engines and transmissions (not just the specialty cars) somewhere around 68.

Numbers matching means full vin in the gm world on the engine, trans, rear end and frame.Ford did put the 2nd half of the vin on the block starting in 67 or 68 but no where else tho.

the toploader i sold had the serial number stamped into it as well. it seems like it was on the front flange of the topside (and the stamping wasn't very clear). would have certainly been difficult to see with it in the car.
