3-point seat belts in a '65

Question 3-point seat belts in a '65

Hey folks...anyone have any experience/advice on installing "modern" 3-point seat belts in a '65? I can't see anywhere that would be strong enough to mount the upper connecting point. Most vehicles use the door posts...but that just ain't an option here!

npdlink.com has some listed in their catalog, but I don't know how they mount up top. Probably have to drill/cut/weld a bit. Another video of a different unit as well below. http://www.npdlink.com/store/product...p_by_year=1965

3-point belts ftw. I installed a set of belts out of a 72 Mustang in my 67 using the existing mounting point in the roof. They're no airbag but at least maybe it'll keep your face & chest out of the steering wheel.

Smart upgrade.

What about convertibles? I seem to have heard something about mounting to the trunk, but would like to see how someone mounts a three point in a 67 convertible.

On a convertible i would use a roll bar as the upper mount spot.

The problem with that, is that a roll bar is more of a threat to health than protection, unless one is wearing a helmet.

I rather take a chances with a roll bar,These cars was build before safety standards came out,They did get some early safety stuff but it was later on like collapsible steering columns in 67 and 3 point seat belts 69 or 70 i can't remember the year.But on a modern crash test these cars would get a one star the lowest rating.

A roll bar that would leave the top functional and the rear seat usable can turn a minor side impact into a fatal event. If you're willing to turn a four seat convertible into a two-seater, and have it look sort of odd, you could make it work, though.

Alternatively, I think you could improve the geometry by mounting it in the trunk with an inertial reel like they do in the Piper Super Cub aircraft. In fact, I'm wondering why one of those wouldn't work? Need to noodle on that one.

To be sure, vintage Mustangs are not "safe" by modern standards, and I understand that. Personally, I reject our modern standard of "safety" and risk aversion. Just check out my blog and the work I do and you'll see that.

Interesting comments..and opinions. As for the "safety features"...as I get older I become more appreciative of them, I think. Been in a couple wrecks before in cars with only lapbelts...and if I can make my ride just a bit more "safer", then great. To each his own...I guess.

Anyway...the 3-point belt kit and all hardware is due to arrive any day now, so I'll soon see if this is really going to work. I hope I don't end up having to send the belts back. If anyone is interested, look up seat belt kit # SP-3P-BK on the Average Joe Restoration website. That's what I ordered.
