Back with a "New" project, 1966 Coupe
#21
Well the stang build is well under way....lots of work being done, again.....every nut and bolt.
Started to strip the body to see exactly what if any rust that needs to be addressed
Ended up welding in a new seat mounting structure to the floor on square tubing to accept the Flo-Fit seats.
Also got the first plate in for the roll bar
Here are some pics for your enjoyment
Looks like (cant tell from the pic) someone did some skimming to make the QP perfect, they didnt do so good, will be addressed before paint, lol
More pics of ALL of the paint coming off
Back panel will be replaced, just a little too wavy, again old school repairs
Roll bar plate welded in
Kind of hard to see but the bottom of the drivers door need a little help with a patch, thankfully it did not hit the grain part of the door, I really wanted to keep the original doors, for fitment and tags
Passenger side.... not some much, will take out a section from a donor door, what the heck it is a race car, lol. Will will surely put Mikes skills to the test on this one
This is prob the worst rust on the whole car (mainly because someone let the weep holes get clogged, come on its a California car how dumb can you get?

Mike is makin progress on the roll bar and seat frame/support too
Seat frame, mounted to the floor pan
roll bar tacked in, yes I know it is not straight up and down but thats how I wanted it lol

transmission
Forgot to mention I spoke to Richmond today, they have been sold and the new owners will not have a 6 speed trans ready for delivery until January, actually the only one currently available is the super T 10 4 speed
Look like its gonna be a Keisler SS 700 5 speed, since I think Tremec suck, my TKO 600 does not shift worth a crap above 5k RPM
Stay tuned for Keisler performance eval, it wont be here for four months.....bummer

Boog,
Cant take credit for the wheel well idea, I got it from Jeff Lilly build of frankenstang, I think thats whats its called, u can google it, and u can see what we are gonna do
The wheels are for a 99-04 mustang so a pretty radical backspace, but that is what i wanted. the rear has a 2 inch mini tub and the 9 inch has been narrowed, so they are 10.5 inch rims in the rear (9.5 in front) with a 6.82 backspacing. They tuck right in near the 4 link and actually stick out just a hair, thats why the fender flares. I want everything inside and the flares we are doing hopefully wont look too obvious.
THe wheels are FR500 style in black chrome. I have black chrome mirrors and door handles to match. The wheels are from wheel replicas and they were not bad at all. I told my guy at Americas tire what I wanted and got it thru them...that way Americas would back up the wheel and tire combo, warranty etc. I paid a little more thru them but its worth it for peace of mind

Oh yeah, I ordered my Keisler SS700 trans kit today, WOO HOO

update
Moving slowly but surely.........on the mustang.
have to move slow with the seat position, in and out, in and out with the mock up seat and the possible positions. Then mock up the roll bar and all bars including the one behind the seat that hold the belt...............and limits the movement of the seat slider, lol.
Another thing Mike has been doing (jeez I wish i could weld) is with the tail panel. This car is pretty rust free, but the tail panel was dinged so it was better (as far as i am concerned) to replace it rather than fill it. So of course there were unseen things (rust at joint of tail panel) that Mike will ultimately remove and replace (see pics) But at least this way i know it is done right and will always be right.
Roll bar is all welded and we decide not to limit the access to the back seat with more cross bars but.........the roll bar moves side to side ever so slightly, so more bars will go in this week.
Back panel has been chopped and modified for our custom rear panel (dimple die will come in here) And we will have to modify the back seat frame around the roll bar. I got a back seat this weekend for 20 bucks, SCORE!
Rear fender mods (METAL) are starting as well. The pieces will have to be sectioned and placed temporarily, Mike likes to look at stuff for a while before diving in, lol (see pics)
Anyway, enjoy the pics and stay tuned for updates, if i didnt already mention it, the New Keisler SS manual trans has been ordered. And next comes the DART 9.5 block!
Here is the little piece that will be replaced after the tail panel spot rivets were removed and we saw a bit of rust
Some of Mikes handy work on the roll bar
right side
Left side rear
Hard to make it out but these are the seat frames, mounted right to the floor and reinforced and french fry catchers in place
And the very beginning of the 1973 QP fenders that will be added with Mikes expertise
pass side
Stay tuned
