Sounds like a choke issue to me.

Does your carb have the automatic choke? If I recall, you push the gas pedal to the floor to engage it before cranking.

I don't have much need for a choke down here but I snagged a choke cable off of a 68 U-Haul truck and installed it on the fastback for the chits and grins.
