If I may...
Not trying to start a fight...but...
Is it me or is Shelby over rated? I mean he was an awesome race driver in the 50's but did he do anything truly special and unique? Seems to me he was at the right place at the right time and had special backing from Ford, Chevy, Mopar and AC as well as access to cool parts. Did he do anything any other tuner wouldn't have thought of? Putting a big ole motor in a lil itty bitty chassis isn't rocket science. Camming out a motor, porting heads or putting bigger carb and brakes isn't necessarily unique.
Don't get me wrong...cars with the Shelby moniker are sexy beasts but he hasn't made a successful car in years if not decades. Someone else builds a hot car, slaps his name on it then turns around and sells it for an ungodly price. I've seen modern tuner Mustangs that would crush a Shelby. The 68 428 Cobra jets would smoke a King of the Road. The Cobra is BA but so is a Sunbeam Tiger with a 302, or an Opel GT with a 289. I once saw an Opel GT with a 454 that crushed all comers at the drags!!
So, what do you think makes Shelby's so special? Besides demand. He was just the right name, at the right place at the right time....and one hell of a chicken farmer!
