Default Okay what kinds of tachs are there?

What kinds of tachs are there made for just testing the RPMs on a car(you know like a tool)? My dad thinks the car is idling way too fast, but i think the flex fan and open headers make it seem faster than it really is.

Oh yeah we did the propane trick and got no raise in rpms. so im pretty sure we have no leaks.

Here is a video of a 750 RPM idle.

I'll bet that if your dad thinks it idling too fast...it is.

AS for tools, you can
1. buy a $39 sun pro tach at pepboys and wire it in

2. buy a $39-59 inductive engine analyzer tool (also by sunpro) at pepboys which allow you to measure among other things; engine RPMs, but also amps, volts, and other nifty things

I have used both of these, I wired in the tach when I had none in the car and needed it to monitor RPMs where the auto was shifting at, but I have used the inductive analyer a hell of alot more over 10 years or so that I have owned it.

Was that open headers? It does make my car seem too fast. Ill buy a cheap gauge for now. If the idle is too high then i must figure out how to lower it. Thus far the fast idle screw was adjusted 1 turn and it didnt do a thing. Are there any other things that make the idle too fast other than a vacuum leak?

Yes, if the timing is too far advanced you will get a fast idle. Put the headers and exhaust together, then worry about the idle speed.

For some odd reason i have decided to do brakes before headers. I think my dad said something stupid like needing brakes so it can be driven to the exhaust shop. Oh well. Once i get the exhaust done then i am saving up until august for my paint job.[8D] I figure i will save at least a couple thousand, not including summer side jobs.
