is the 302 a good motor or not
I Have a 68 mustand i'm planning on doing a swam to a 302 with a c4 tranny, my friends have all told me i should go with a 351 because the 302 is junk, i thought they were good motors anyways i just want to know if there good motors or not and how cheaply you can build them up?

The 302 is a good motor. There's probably a reason that it has been around for 30 years. The 351 can be a more powerful engine because of displacement but they are a little more expensive. The 302 is probably the 2nd cheapest engine to build up (after the chevy 350). There are countless parts and parts suppliers available.

Like the man said, it's a solid, reliable engine. Can easily make 400 HP, at minimum cost. A 351W would look better in the engine bay, but the 302 is good motor.

in my opinion, 302 can get just as much power out of it as a 351 and or more, depending on what you do to it, which is better cause its a lighter motor, meaning you'll cut a tenth or so off your time, but if you have the money for the 351 and can beef the junk out of that as you would the 302, then go for it

Hey, I gotta 302 with C4 and acctually I just got it so I can't tell you too much. But as far as I drove it cople of times: I houled ***. Everyone tells me that 302 is a good engine and it's easy to work on. And just like meich 75 said, there are parts all over the place. So go ahead, make your choice...

RE: is the 302 a good motor or not
I put a new motor in my car about a year ago. I had the option of a 302 or 351W. I figured, I'm only doing this once I might as well not regret my decision! Yes, a 302 can put out 400hp but my 351w with Holley 650cfm dbl pumper, and eldelbrock heads/intake manifold I'm getting 320bhp - without really trying. Imagine what I could do if the "CFO" would write a blank check!
Besides, it's much nicer to say "351w" when someone asks what's under the hood!!! [sm=smiley20.gif]

The 302 is a solid, strong motor that if done right, can produce some serious horsepower. The best thing is, it's been around so long, aftermarket parts are plentiful.

As most have stated allready, the 302 motor is just about bullet proof, and less expensive. The 302 has a shorter stroke than the 351 so the side effect will be, higher RPM can be turned (if all things are equal)without fear of spitting pistons through the hood. Coupled to the C4 transmission is great combo, as the there is less HP losses through the C4 than the C6. [sm=smiley20.gif]
