Default headers w/ c-6

Hi, I am a newbie to the forum, but have a question that I am hoping someone can help me out with. I have a 67 that I am building with a 302/C4 combo, but am thinking about putting a C6 in at a later date. I am looking at purchasing headers for the car but am looking for some that will fit the C6 so I don't have to purchase a second set down the road. Does anyone know of manufacture and part # for such headers? Also, does the C4/C6 switch require any special adjustments to the engine/drive line? Thanks!

First let me ask, why do you want to change out to a C6 down stream. Problem with the C4 you have now?

Yes problems...It has gone out on me twice...one more time and it is gone...From what I have heard the c-6 is bigger, strong, etc, and I believe I could find one with a 4 sp instead of the 3 sp that I have now...what is your suggestion?

What do you think is causing the problems? And, yes the C6 is a lot bigger and a bit stronger, but you can build a C4 to easily handle a 1000 HP. the technology has come a long way. The only way to get a 4 speed is to go to an AOD. As far as I know, I have never seen a 4 speed in a C4.
I would suggest that with the right parts, that C4 will stand up to anything you can dish out. I would use some hardened parts, and good aftermarket clutch packs, and an aftermarket planetary.
The C6 will slow you down with the extra weight alone. It also uses more HP to turn the C6, so you will loose rear wheel power.

Just an idea, but let me know what went out on the C4...I run a C4 in mine, and it sees 750 HP week after week. I do "freshen it" every two to three years with new bands and clutches, but it has been trouble free.

I am not sure what the trouble has been with the C-4. Tranys are not something that I know much about. I believe though, both times the bands have gone out on it. I know that you can build anything up but it is just a matter of $$. I can get a inexpensive C-6 rebuilt, i believe in 69 they came with 4 sp, and have a stronger trany for much less $$. Therefore, I was wanting headers to fit a C-6. Your points about greater weight and lossing HP are very well taken though. Do you know what the HP loss and weight differences are by chance? If I found out this information then I would need to evaluate pros and cons.

I do not know the exact details, but here is a site that might help. I might send them an e-mail for more of the details..

Stick with the C4, after all you can get rebuilt ones for around $300.00 + core. Mine has held up just fine, its stock with a B&M shift kit.

Ron thank for all of your info. Did you complete the rebuild and maintain the trans or do you have a shop do it? Also, either case could I get the specifics (bands, etc) that you use in your trans? I am not going to be running as much HP as you but I do not want to continue to have to deal with my C-4 going out. Thanks again.

I buy the parts myself, a far as the clutch packs and bands from a company called JPT, Jim's Performance Transmission in Michigan. 517-663-0578
They only do Performance Ford transmissions. Primarely the C4 & C6. I trust the quality of their parts. I have a friend who I met through my racing contacts that does the rebuild for me. The labor is about $125.00 + my parts cost. I prefer buying my own parts, so I don't have to deal with the mark up they put on it.

Ron, I am going to have about 350HP with my 302, what type of headers would you suggest to run on it? My buddy suggested that I purchase ceramic coated headers but I would like to keep the cost as low as possible without sacrificing flow. This will be a daily driver. I have been looking at the Headman Hedders Headers, 1 5/8" top, 3" connector. Are they good, bad, OK, etc? I would appreciate your option about it because of your vast experience. Thanks again for all of your info!
