Strange Noise
On occaision when i first start up my motor, there is a ticking noise coming from the passenger side valve cover and it increases with engine speed. But once the motor is warmed up it stops and it usually doesnt make this noise, so im just wondering what it could possibly be. Also, how long would it take to adjust the valves and is there anything else i should check/adjust while im in that far?

make sure that isnt an exhaust leak. when your engine heats up everything could warp back into a good fit and when it is cold there could be a small gap.

If you lifters are old, its a lifter. They will do that when cold and will quiten down when it gets warmed up. Mine has 130K miles on it and it does it too. If your engine is solid lifter, then this isn't it though. If its hydraulic lifters though, I'd say its what it is.

Ya if its a hydraulic lifter engine then thats what i would put my money on. If its a solid lifter engine then it would be the valves as the solid lifter causes the valves to need adjusting constantly, not practical for the street.

Noisy lifter, next time you change oil, add 1 quart marvel mystery oil into crankcase, and add 4 qts of your usual oil. Really works good on busting up gum in sticky lifters./
That is what I would say to do. The only thing I would do different is I would add the Marvel Mystery oil and then change the oil after about 200 miles. It has great detergent in it and cleans the insides well.

I just did change the oil with some of that High Mileage ENgine oil, dont know if it really works, but since i changed it over i havent heard the noise since. I usually run Lucas oil products so i guess that would be like the Marvel. Also, a stock 1968 289 is a solid lifter motor correcT?
