Repair orig Pony seats or get repros ?
Hi all,
I have an original pony interior in my 66 coupe. The seats are in excellent condition apart from the stitching in the seats in the butt position.
I'm sure if a good auto trimmer could repair these or should I just get a repro set front and back to match ?
Does anyone think that's repairable ? Or should I go with the new covers ?
If I were to get new covers which repro ones are the best copy of the OE and the best quality ?
Thanks for any help.
Ron

If they are repairable you would be crazy to buy repo's.
Get an estimate on repair cost. It may be cheaper just to have your restiched.
If not I use CJ Mustang for parts.
Here is there link.

I agree with rwh129...If the seats are repairable at a reasonable price I would keep the originals....if not check online for seats from a parts car online or a local junkyard.

It depends on what you are trying to do. Keep in mind that the seats are 40 years old, if you repair them how long will they last with daily use. Not long I would say. Just something to think about.

Hey Texas...
I had the same issue with my seats. The thread was worn to the point of failure, but the vinyl was in perfect shape. I decided to try to take it apart and replace the stiching by hand. It worked flawlessly! The only problem I had was that the new stiching was very "new" looking, so I wiped the stiching with very dirty fingers to color match! No laughing now!!!
I would def repair your seat covers. If you get the covers off and find them rotten - no loss, just order new ones then!
Good luck,
Troy

I'm thinking there is a reason why the old vinyl gave way, and the stitching wore out. They are old......yeah, 40 years old. I would go against the majority here and replace the covers with new repops.

I have to agree with Soaring. I replaced my drivers seat with a new cover, and It looks so good, that the rest just had to be done. (I thought the rest were in good condition) Untill you see a new covers, you dont realize how warn the old ones are.
Texas, you are in Australia. Check out Mustangs of Melbourne, or Capital Classics in Canbera. They both stock most common colours, or will order your in for you.

I have battled with this issue as well. My seats are in very good condition with separation in three pleats of the inserts at the butt. On the outer corners of each front seat, we stitched them back with heavy thread. Like someone else, I wiped dirty fingers to "blend". I wondered about the value of "original dirty -vs- new clean". The forum said go with new. After seeing some completly redone red interiors, like mine, I have to agree. Although, it will be the last thing I do.
