Over Heating P*SSING Me off!
Howdy,
I hope you guys can give me some Ideas.
I recently bought a 1967 Mustang, 289/2v California Car. Which I think that you all know that means that it has that crapy smog pump junk. But, the guy that I bought it off of lived in Illinois and never check to see if it had water or anti-freeze in it......and it had water which in-turned popped out a freeze plug.....Thank Goodness!!!!
But, now my real problem is that the same Idiot must have taken the thermostat out because it was over-heating......which didn't fix the problem. I am figuring that since the owner from California ran water, that the inside must be corroded, Now is there anything that I can do that doesn't require me to completely rebuild the motor?
THANKS
Tony

I had a 68 289 2v that had the same problem. I recommend removing the radiator and have it rodded (Rodding removes the top and bottom tanks and cleans the core).
Replace the coolent and you must have a thermostat installed. Not only does the thermostat regulated the temp, but also regulates the flow through the radiator. Without the thermostat, the flow is to fast through the radiator and never has a chance to cool off, thereby overheating.
Good luck, Vince[sm=smiley20.gif]

also make sure you have a good fan shroud, no cracks, and check your heater core to make sure it isnt leaking or clogged. Another thing to look at is the bottom radiator hose, it may be weak and can collapse when the motor gets hot. I would look into a new radiator, they arent too expensive, I bought a 3 row for less than 200.00. Definitely use a thermostat, I would say 180 or 190.
After I did all of that to mine, it still ran hot. Turned out some genious installed the distributor without checking TDC, and to cover his mistake he jumped the ignition wires one terminal on the distrbutor. .I could never get the car to run right, and it always ran hot. This past weekend I redid the distributor, and wired it correctly, and the overheating is gone, and she runs great.
Beware of previous owners!!!
