Default Can anyone help a 64 1/2 mustang

Hey everyone:

First problem:

The brake lights stop working. If you turn on the lights, they do not come on. If you step on the brake, they do not come on. If you turn on the blinker, the appropriate brake light blinks properly. Does anyone know what COULD be going on?

Second problem:

The gas gauge and temperature gauge does not work. I read in the shop manual that if they point the same way then it is the contant voltage regulator(or whatever it is called) is bad. Well I have bought two of them and it does nothing. Is there something I am missing? Or at least tell me a few things I can check.

I am just not that great at electric stuff, but trying to learn. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

First off, do you have the correct bulbs installed? That said, it sounds like it could be the brake light switch on the pedal or a bad ground. also are the bulbs put in the correct way. Double check the wiring connections.
As for your guage problem, usually it is the constant voltage regulator on the back of the instrument panel, if that isn't it you need to check for voltage at the sending units themselves. Pull the wire off of the sending unit and ground it with a jumper wire to the chasis, the guages should go to full. If this happens, the sender is bad. My bet is on the CVR though.

Well, I am pretty sure the bulbs are not the problem since they work 2 weeks ago. And the bulbs still blink.

I will try testing the sending unit this weekend. Thanks for the info about that. Like I said before thought, I don't think it is the constant voltage regulator since I bought 2 new ones and none of them made a difference.

on your lights, I am thinking either a wiring problem , or the headlight switch is going bad. They cause some wierd stuff to happen.

If you have replaced the instrument cluster regulator as Bob suggested, then its either the sending units, or the gauges in the dash itself have gone bad.

Thanks for the info.

This weekend I have bribed one of my friends that is a electic wizard. So hopefully with his help we can diagnose the problem and get the pony back on the road.

Did you by any chance replace your from parking lights with repoduction parts recently? I had a very simular problem. I found out it was the contact for the parking light it was mushroom shaped & when I put a bulb in it & turned on my lights it shorted out my , brake lights fuel gage etc. took .02 worth of black electrical tape to fix it
