My 289 has a 2 barrel carb on it now and i want to convert it to a 4 barrel. when i do this do i have to get a 4 barrel intake manifold or is there some kind of adapter that i could put on and still use the manifold i have now?

I would recommend a 4 bbl manifold. Manifolds are cheap enough these days that you could purchase a used one for less than 100.00. There are adapter plates available. but in my mind it defeats the purpose when a true 4 bbl manifold is easy to obtain.

i havent seen a 2 to 4 adapter but even if there was it would be feeding to much fuel and it wouldnt run right. just go with the manifold like 68GEETEE said.

Am I the only one here who is really sick of people starting the exact same post over and over. Maybe if we all stop answering the same questions evey time some clueless newbie who cant look throught the previous posts asks some basic question that has already been answered in three differnt posts in the past two weeks. Just my opinion.

Directed to Ian70: I am one of the "clueless newbies" who started a post regarding carb/intakes, however mine was VERY specific in regards to a Holley 570's capabilities and I appreciated the response I got. That being said, let me apoloize on behalf of all us clueless newbies for wasting your precious time while you could be dispensing your delicate genius to others who are at least as smart as you.
Im sure that RAdams really appreciates your insult and feels very welcome at this site. Have a great day.

Hey Ian70,

You may not be the only one who may be sick of people starting the exact same post over and over. But not every one can spend all day or night looking for someone elses post to see if it is what they are looking for.

You don't have to answer their post if you don' t want to. I will answer a repeated newbies question if I think they can benifit from my knowledge and experiance. So don't get so pissy. This is not the comaro forum for butt heads.

To RAdams I say, Welcome... & Edelbrock makes a Performer 289/302 4V intake and a 600CFM carb that is a winning combo.[sm=smiley20.gif]

Ahhh, 65_2 beat me too it! I'm looking to get the Edelbrock RPM performer, with the airgap feature. I've heard good things about it. I cant decide on which carb to go with though. I was thinking the 600, only because i would like to keep my mileage above 10 mpg.

Oh, and to ian, who cares?

I wonder about the hood clearance with a dual plane hig rise. My 67 hood is close even to a stock set up. One of the small runner X-planes might work well with a 600 and avoid clearance trouble.

Parabellum,

Don't worry about the 10 mpg. I run a 750 Holley on a 302 in a 69 F100. I have 1.94/1.50 valves, 11:1 compression and a mild cam. Even with a 3:50-1 rear I get 14 mpg. The 230-6cyl that came in the truck only got 15.5 at best. You should get at least 18 mpg in a lighter car with so much less frontal area to push.

Default Conversion

As some of the others have said, go with a 4bbl intake. I have seen fractory cast iron intakes at swap meets for about $50. With regard to a carburetor, go smaller rather than larger. A 600 is more than enough for a 289. The Edelbrock, which is based on a Carter AFB, is a good set it and forget it unit. They are taller than Holley's though so check you hood clearence.

Thanks 67coupe, I am a little worried about it, but oh well, gas is only what...2.29 for the crappy stuff now. I dont know about the 18 though, im averaging about 11 im guessing right now. I wonder if ill have trouble with hood clearance. I have a holley now, i hadnt considered the edelbrock being taller, plus im thinking about going with the airgap. Im sure theres room. Thanks again for the input.
