Default A/C issues

Hi,

I just had work done on my ’65 A/C system. I trust the work, but I discovered that the replacement compressor clutch assembly has a shallower pulley on it than the original ’65 part – evidently a modernization of the brushes that the original used has narrowed the assembly. As a result, the belt that spins the compressor is about a quarter inch out of alignment with the other pulleys that share the belt. I dug around on the Internet and found some replacement brushes for the old ’65 part, but nothing in the way of a rebuilt or new manufacture clutch assembly that specifically details the pulley depth (or notes the old style brush assembly as a requirement). I kept the original part in the hopes that it could be rebuilt – but so far; no luck. Does anyone have a similar experience – or know of a source for the original part – or know of a replacement that matches the depth of the original pulley? So far the A/C is working (it required a shorter belt to eliminate the squeal caused by the original belt over a smaller pulley). but I’d like to return it to the factory set up.

Thanks

Why would you wan't to return to the lessor technology? Can you move the brackets a little to bring the pully into alignment? Or combine that pully with another pully on a diffent notch.

Hi Amsoil,

I want to keep the car as original as possible - the original part functioned fine for about 40 years. The compressor is a solid mount on the top of the block with no wiggle room in the bracket; the pulley only has one notch.

Thanks

can you simply place some spacers (5/16 washers) between the compressor and the block? You may need to get 1/4 longer bolts, but they are pretty standard and you should be able to get them at any auto parts store.

The compressor needs to be forward, spacers would only lift it.
