Default 4 or 5 speed?

So I've bee nthinking about replacing the c4 in my 65 289 coupe with a refreshed borg warner t-10 4 speed, but then I started thinkin about it. What about a 5 speed? What do you guys think? and if a 5 speed what kind? Why would you pick one or the other? (aside from originality) thanks guys just lookin for some choices.

ORIGINAL: atomsk680

t-5 5 speed or t-56 6 speed

i second those. unless you reeeally like a four speed go with those or you could always go big block and put in a tko 600.

better gearing for off the line acceleration and lower highway rpm's with the low gearing of fifth. you could also get steeper gears out back and get even better acceleration

You also have to take engine mods into consideration

up to 350 ft/lb torque - T5
above that toploader or 6speed

Acceleration will be a bit better with the T5, not to mention the advantage of having overdrive is pretty nice, especially if you do much highway driving. The total cost to convert to either the toploader or T5 will likely be pretty close, with the t5 being slightly higher. Heres the ratios for the wide, close, T5, and C4. Dont forget the C4 has numerically smaller ratios because of the advantage of the torque converter.

wide ratio toploader:
1st- 2.78
2nd- 1.93
3rd- 1.36
4th- 1

close ratio toploader:
1st- 2.32
2nd- 1.69
3rd- 1.29
4th- 1

T5:
1st- 3.35
2nd- 1.93
3rd- 1.29
4th- 1
5th- 0.68

C4:
1st- 2.46
2nd- 1.46
3rd- 1

As for the T10, they seemed to vary depending on year and wide or close ratios, so check this site to see what you want.

yep, i just put a T5 in my pony, i cant wait to get my driveshaft in and see how she drives. I thought about the T-56, only reason I didnt do it was cuz it was just easier to buy a whole T5 swap kit. But the T56 is a great tranny. 6-speed. Handles alot more torque, but also has a lower gear ratios, so if you want to keep a nice amount of acceleration, you may want to change your diff gears to something higher.

If you decide to go for a 5 speed do us all a favor.

Get a couple of friends and a stop watch and do some carefully thought out acceleration tests before and after and honestly report it to us all.

My bet would be that the 4 will come out better and a 3 better would be better yet unless you are trully an expert on shift speeds and techniques.
