Default How can you tell the difference between a 289 and a 302

My car was in the shop for a front disc brake job, and the mechanic said an appraiser was in doing some appraisel for another car. While he was waiting he was looking at my engine and said it was a 302 not a 289 (like the badges on the side fender)-he said there was a stamped number/code on the manifold that told him so-he said it was unlikely that it was a 289 with a 302 manifold -the engine also has an air conditioner bracket (no compressor), but there is no signs in the firewall of any holes for air conditioning hoses and no ac vents in the interior-I am thinking it is not the original engine-the codes on my door say it should be a 289.

I am new to this mustang thing! I also know that the codes on the door could be wrong-for example, thedoor could be from another car-my codes read that I should have standard interior, but I have Pony, the car was painted raven black but mine is red (I cant find any black anywhere).....
bottom line-how do you identify a 302 engine...Thanks Scott

66,

I have the same thing the intake manifold on the 289 and 302 is interchangable, check the block number which mean removing the starter motor and looking at the number there and then running the number on the internet.

you would figure that an appraiser would know a lot about all cars. A 289 and 302 are the same block, but a 302 has a longer stroke. Most of the parts are interchangeable. You will find the code behind the starter as stated before.

When I take my valve covers off, there is a "289" stamped - does this not tell me it's a 289? A lot easier than taking the starter off.

Yep, but it only takes two nano seconds to get the starter off. Those could be 289 heads on a 302 for all you know. Doesn't really matter though unless you are into Concours shows.

they sell tools to stick in the plug hole and it will measure the stroke of the crank, thats the only way besides tearing it down.
