Default 65 maybe 64 1/2

we just bought what we thought was a 65 but when buying parts for it, the dealer has expressed that it may be a 64 1/2. anyone have any thoughts as to just what to look for the would distinguish the one year from the other?

hi i'm john, the best way to get the right year on your mustang is to check the vend on it. Or another way is to look under the hood of your mustang and see if it has a alternator, or generator, depending on the previous owner it would be good if you knew exactly what mods he did to your mustang. i hope i was of some help plz email me at johnwsix@bellsouth.net if you have further questions thanx

Unless it was converted somewhere along the line, a 64 1/2 will be equipped with a generator and the bellhousing will have five bolts, not six. That said it is entirely possible that the car was converted during it's lifetime. The best way to verify the year is through the VIN.

Even if it has been converted your dash lights will either say GEN or ALT. If it says GEN it's a 64 1/2. There are lots of distiguishing features, but that by far is the easiest to deteremine.

Other features:
Lip of hood rolled under.
NO wire on gas cap (usually been added later)
non-adjustable passenger seat
no rear seat-belts (can't remember for sure if it was even an option)
smaller lettering and running horse on sides
Trunk lettering...can't remember the particulars...
something about the vent handles too, but I can't remember.
screw jack (typically missing)
manufacturing date on door tag anything prior to September 64 is 64 1/2.

Theres a whole list, but this is what I remember off the top of my head. I used to have it down cold when I had mine. Just FYI even w/in the 64 1/2 model run, depending on how early/late in the period it was made, there will be differences. For instance, on mine I didn't have a backup light switch connector under the hood. The wire ran directly from the tranny up the fire wall (under the sound padding) down the door and to the rear end. Everybody thought I was nuts. Early manufactoring date though, and turns out, wired JUST like a '64 Falcon.

Easiest way to tell is check the VIN #. The 5th letter will tell you(if it's a D, U or F) it's a 64-1/2. The generator is also a good giveaway. As pichinco stated the following will be different:
Hood Lip is rolled toward the headlight
No gas cap wire
Pass seat doesn't adjust
Smaller lettering on fender
The driver side air vent **** will have an "A" stamped on it
The heater control OFF is in the center, not on the left
The horns under the hood will be mounted on the frame rails, not the radiator support
The battery vent on the radiator support will be sort of louvered, not just stamped out

There are many more, I just can't think of them right now as I'm at work and the car is home. If you need more info, feel free to e-mail me at bobemmerich@hotmail.com . Put 64-1/2 differences in the subject line and I'll try to get pics of the differences to you.
