rear engine seal

Default rear engine seal

does anyone know a good way to replace a rear engine seal

Pull the old one out and put the new one in. Works for me every time.

Oh...be sure to drop the pan and pull/loosen the crank.

Yeah, if it is a rope you can do that. But if it is rubber, you will need to drop the tranny. There is a special tool for getting out the old one.

Yeah, forgot about the tranny. I usually pull the engine if the rear main leaks...and refresh the engine.

You don't have to drop the tranny to change a neoprene rear seal unless you are working on a late model engine with the one piece seal.

Yes it can be done with the neoprene seal. Still you must pull the rear main cap, and at least loosen the rest of them to get the crank down far enough to push the old seal out and the new one in. its not something a first timer should try IMHO..
