Difference between a Spool vs. Mini-spool carrier

RE: Difference between a Spool vs. Mini-spool carrier
All you need is a limited slip unit like an auburn or if you want to go the detroit locker style that works too. Essentially all your adding is a limited slip carrier (and depending on whether you want to change your gear ratio, you would also need to change your ring and pinion gear).

i think im going to go with a true trac detroit locker.
i have a friend with a mini spool in his 69 camaro. i told him that might not be a good idea but its his decision.

I know thumpin has already said how they would perform on the streets, but hey since your buddy has one, would you mind asking him how it drives around town?
just curious...

If he hasnt broken anything yet, he will say it works fine with no problems.. you watch.. LOL...
Well to swap center sections you need to drain the fluid, pull both axles, pull the driveshaft, unbolt the center and take it out. Clean everything really well, then reassemble in reverse order.
Dont try swapping the gears, or carrier, just swap the center sections. If you dont know how to build a rear end and set up gears, you will just make a bunch of junk parts..

i have a mini spool and turning in a parking lot is rather difficult. I'm not pushing big numbers like 500 horses so for my output i don't think i'll be breaking anything. My tires still won't hook up so it's not like i'm launching real hard. if i go turbo in a couple months i'll be getting the richmond powertrax system.

Mojoe,
I dont really agree with Thumpin on the durability side. We have a full spool in a 500hp tarmac rally car that gets punished severely off the line and on country roads that are a long way off circuit smooth. Evidence attached.
IMO it doesnt break axles b/c the tyres let go first. But this may be different for the full drag cars.
But it does chew crap out of the rear tyres at low speeds and carparks are a bitch. As far as handling, it definately creates more understeer by "pushing" the front as you turn into corners b/c both back wheels are turning at the same speed all the time. If you overcook it coming out of a corner, it tends to snap the tail rather than gracefully powerslide like a limited slip would.
So in general I agree...bad idea for street applications.

spot on Scott, although i have to say our car is not overly engineered (may be described as a pig) but improving every year.
Any time anyone wins a lottery and wants to come out, our favorite event is in November (http://www.classicadelaide.com.au/ca/overview.htm ). We usually get a few US owners with their cars turn up (but they are often the likes of vintage Ferarris). The last one of note was Bobby Rahal. Geoff Zwart of Pikes Peak fame also attended one of our rallies earlier this year.
anyway, enough on that and sorry for redirecting the post...i just get too excited around this time of year as we get full into preparations.
here's a couple of Mustangs we compete against. the green Boss runs a 600hp 302 (not stroked!!) Very fun to watch. the Shelby pilot is a nutcase. he bends panels on that machine every year.
