Default I6 rebuild

I'm getting the engine in my '68 I6 rebuilt. Carb, fuel pump, radiator, as much as I can tell everything is pretty much getting redone along with the rebuild. The estimate is about $3500, and its being done by a local mustang mechanic.
Is there anything I should keep in mind? Anything I should do while the engine is out and being rebuilt? Anything I can add on, or anything extra I can or should get done to get alittle more power out of her? Any advice in general?

Now would be a good time to restore the engine bay. Strip off all the old paint and put on a fresh coat. Also, if you have any rust issues in that area, now would be a good time to take care of that.

Yeah, that is more than twice what a stock rebuilt I6 should cost. Check out these prices of rebuilt I6 engines.

But how many hours did it take you to install? $3500, is not just for the motor itself, but for all the things described in my original post, and installation. Or should it bee $1500 installed? That seems a little low. i did the math.... If the rebuilt engine is $1500 that laeaves $2000 for labor at eighty something and hour, and to have the radiator, carb, fuel pump, and hoses redone.
