Is a 289 a good engine
Well i guess im stuck buying a new engine for my stang or rebuilding it. i have the 302 which i quess im told that its running on 4 cyl only and i need to get it rebuilt or drop in a new one. there is this guy selling a 65 stang for 2500 with a 289 in it im thinking about buying it and taking the engine and putting it on my mustang but i want a good engine. one that can give me some good power. the idea of buying the mustang for 2500 isnt that bad cuz maybe i can use some of the parts it has and maybe sale some or something im thinking about asking 2000 for the whole car tho. oh yeah and the 289 has only 600 miles on it its brand new. my question is can i get some good horses out of the 289 is it a big difference from the 302?

There is very little difference in the 289 and 302. The 289 actually winds up a bit faster. The 289 was placed in tens of thousands of Ford cars, and is a survivor engine. Mine is 41 years old, and still runs like a top without an overhaul. You cannot go wrong with that 289. 2500 is a decent price for the car. He spent about half that on the overhaul of the engine alone.

The stock 289 C code gets close to 200 flywheel horsepower, but with aftermarket add-ons such as aluminum heads, intake manifold, 4V carb, headers, cam and some decent dual exhausts you can easily get 300 horsepower, which is more than enough for such a light car. Add some 3.55:1 gears and decent meat for tires, and you will be in restomod heaven. That's all the ponies I have in my 03 Mach1, and it will scare the bejesus out of you. 0-60 at 4.7 seconds is fast enough for a street car.

I call that a good start.
I'm sure the Soaring Slayer is a little quicker than that, though.
