turn downs vs. tail pipes

turn downs vs. tail pipes
I'm planning to replace the single exhaust system on my 70 Mustang 302 with a dual exhaust. I was thinking about simply installing a set of turn downs on the mufflers and having the exhaust terminate at the rear axle rather than installing tailpipes. I figured this would save me some money on parts as well as simplify the installation process. Does anyone have their car set up like this or have any opinions on this?

Out the back. Looks cool IMO. There are a lot of chrome exhaust tips out there not to mention the Mustang dual exhaust stock look. I just added GT trumpets to my car and they really changed the sound!

RE: turn downs vs. tail pipes
most of my cars have either turn downs or just end at the muffler by the rear axle. most conversations are donw at a raised volume level and are filled with "WHAT?" and "HUH?" a few "Can you say again?" it puts resonance into the car and that is not a consideration in a drag car, but sucks on the street.
If I daily drive it or take the kids for a ride in it, it has tail pipes. No tail pipes and the kids fall asleep in about two minutes.. not entirely bad, but cant be good for them.

if you have a firebird/camaro, mullet, thick backhair, handlebar mustache, drink lukewarm canned beer at all meals of the day, wear a wifebeater as a shirt or go around telling everyone to "Get-R-Dunnn" without ever really specifying what "R" is, then turn downs are probably for you....
if none of these apply, get frigging tail pipes.....
