72 fastback
hey guys I just bought a 72 mach 1 but the original engine has been removed which makes me mad, but what can you do? Anyways i was wondering what the specs were on the rear axle and whether or not i could put my EFI 306 in there. Also i have an 8.8 rear from a 88 5.0 and was wondering if i could transfer my new t5 and aluminum driveshaft along with my rear axle into the car. Please help. Thanks in advance, Dustin

RE: 72 fastback
The EFI 306 will fit with room to spare. As for the rear, anything that would have been installed from the factory will be more than a match for that 306, whether it's an 8" or 9". Don't waste your time with the 8.8" in a classic.

Does it have an engine right now? If its a Cleveland its a keeper.. if its a Windsor its still a keeper but will need aftermarket heads to really run hard.. if its a 429, when can I stop by and pick it up?

No like i said some jackass already took the original 351 cleveland out of it, so it has a 302 in it. Heres my dilemma tho, i just redid my 302 and i put in a new t5, aluminum driveshaft and a rebuilt rear end with 390s will this transfer over or will i have to get a new tranny and driveshaft again?

RE: 72 fastback
Well other than the T5 being a pull type or hydrualic throw out bearing, yeah it will work. The 8.8 can be made to work but there is alot of work including fabrication involved. There are kits available to install the T5 in older cars, check the FAQ for more info on the swap and the EFI install. I would sell the rear end and driveshaft or use it on anothe rproject. Going from what is possibly a 9" rear to an 8.8 is just silly. Even the 8" rear is a decent piece and the hassle ot isntalling the 8.8 would cost more than a posi and new gears for the 8".

RE: 72 fastback
You should have a 9 inch, which is better than the 8.8. You won't find a kit to install the T5, but it won't take a whole lot of fabrication to modify the rear mount. You'll need a custom driveshaft to go between the rear and the tranny. And, you'll need a shifter relocation kit like they make for the 65-70 Stangs. You may need to modify it a little for the distance in the '72, but it isn't too big of a deal.
