Mine was around $1000 runs on 220v and will happily run the DA for hours on end.. Crank up the regulator and lugnuts are a breeze with the impact.

I am gonna guess that you dont need something like I have... Check around, a 3hp portable should work for what you want, just get a decent one.

Check Sears and Home Depot, I got mine from Home Depot and it came with a bunch of air tools, like an impact wrench, air chisle, air ratchet and spray gun. I think it ran around $300-350.

For light duty work like you described, you don't need a woopty doo big name compressor. However, the bigger the tank, the longer it will pump before having to recycle. If you don't mind waiting between recycles, get about a 2 1/2 or 3 gallon one that pumps something like 120-130 PSI. Air guns require at least 70 psi. Check Ebay.
You can probably come up with one for a couple of skins. Or for one like this, you may get by real cheap. http://cgi.ebay.com/CAMPBELL-HAUSFEL...QQcmdZViewItem

I got mine at home depot for a couple hundred dollars... big tank... cant remember how big though... seems like 40 gals... one thing you mentioned in your post was sanding.... if you forget sanding you can get by pretty cheap... sanders take large amounts of air... thats one thing i cannot do with mine...

Save up a little extra money and get the most cfm you can afford, I picked mine up at Home Depot
its a 60gal 5hp 220v it can run 16.5 cfm at 135psi and its max psi is 175psi. It ran me like $850 it was
not the most expensive but was not the cheapest and it can run anything I need.

since HVLP is the latest/greatest for painting, you want to get the highest CFM rating you can afford. Low end minimum for HVLP seems to be around 11 to 12 CFM. Naturally, more is better...
