Default Newbie ?

My wife and I just bought our first classic mustang. It is a 66 coupe with a 289 auto. I have several questions to post but will start out one at a time. Coming from the distributer there is a wire that goes to the coil, ok. There is something round wrapped in electrical tape in the center of the wire. Could someone tell me what this might be, Thanks

Sounds like a splice. Definitely unwrap it and make sure it's assembled correctly.

Well if its a splice, replace the plug wires... the coil wire will come with the set... [:-]

Thunderize beat me to it. I was assuming it wasn't the coil wire...though I can't say that I haven't seen a spliced coil/spark plug wire.

Does it look like someone spliced a wire, then soldered the two together and used heat shrink or tape? If it hooks up to the + side of the coil, it is the positive wire that should be going into your distributor. If it is spliced, then take that southern engineering stuff off and put a single wire from the plus (battery) side of your coil into the dizzy. If you still have points, consider the Pertronix electronic ignition upgrade for less than 70 bux.

I thought the negative side went to the points.

Idea, you are right the wire does go to the - side of the coil. How do you add pics to the post? Thanks
