Default 1/4 Panel 70 Mach1?

Im currently in work on replacing the 1/4 panel on my fastback, got a few ?'s

1. Sanded the area where the panel meets the roof, no bondo so im sure its filled with lead.

How do I remove it? and is it as simple as heating it with a propane torch?

Any safety concerns with heating it up and letting it run off?

2. When I get the new panel on is this area ok to bondo? I dont have the means to do lead.

Thanks guys,

Yes you are correct it is lead...I have a 70 as well. As far as i am aware heating it up is the only way to get it off. An old timer did my car and he put lead back in after replacing the quarters but you could use bondo if you want. It will not last as long as the lead but most do it that way these days.

Lead when heated is very toxic...be sure to do this outside or in a well vetilated area. I would also wear a painting mask just to be safe.

Good Luck

Here is a restoration site that should help. It sounds like you are attempting to replace the full quarter and perhaps the full quarter must be done. If not, it is always a good idea to cut out just what's bad, leaving as much original metal as possible. If you can skin it, this site will be very helpful.

Problem with a partial skin is you now have two seams instead of one. This is going to force you to put alot of bondo on your quarters. Even though getting the lead out is a pain it is well worth it to put new full quarters. Just my opinion. I went through the same delema not that far back.

Who said getting the lead out was a pain? If you are a professional body man by all means replace the full quarter, if not I would only cut out what needs to be cut out. My quarters were skinned and butt-welded and required very little bondo.

I agree with chillin. Unless you have OEM qtrs your best bet is to remove and replace the rusted areas of the panel. You can purchase a skin and cut the needed sections out of it. Butt welds will produce minimal filler application. Sooner or later, if you replace every part with an aftermarket repro, you'll wind up like the guy who stated he had Abe Lincolns ax. "I replaced the head and the handle is new,but the ax still occupys the same space the original once did."
