The C4 starts out in 1st gear even if it is in Drive. The converter allows the tranny to shift at certain RPM's with a stall converter. Depending on which stall converter you have will determine at which RPM the tranny will shift. With the 1st and 2nd gear positions you can keep the tranny from shifting until you kick it up to the next gear. For daily driving, just keep it in the green drive position. For racing, get a higher stall converter so the engine reaches peak power before it shifts. I guess to answer your question, you start out in drive or the green position even when racing. If you are really interested in this topic, here is some bedtime reading for ya.

Put your tranny in 2 and hit the gas. Let us know how it feels. Most of us know it'll be really doggy...mainly because you are starting in second gear.

To launch, either put the selector in D (to allow the auto to shift for you) or 1 (to manually shift the gears). Step on the brake, bring the revs up, release brake and roll onto the gas. Perfect the launch by adjusting the rpm you rev to while the brakes are on and how fast you roll onto the gas to eliminate unnecessary wheel spin.

I always start my C4 out in first and shift through each gear. It lets you ride out the rpms more than the tranny would in regular D. Be careful with the stock shifter about upshifting too far and sliding into N (good way to over-rev and float a valve). Can't go wrong with an aftermarket B&M gate or ratchet shifter if you're worried about doing that.
