Voltage Regulator

Voltage Regulator
I'm looking to replace the voltage regulator after upgrading to a 100A alternator - the only voltage regulators I can find from NAPA/Autozone are for "38, 42, 55, 61 Amp Alternators"
Do voltage regulators exist in 100A or what is the solution to this?

What type of alternator are you buying. Most of the 100 amp + are self regulating and you don't use the regulator. I just went to a 100 amp powermaster - bolted up to starter side of celenoid and removed regulator and harness.

I wired it up just like the old alternator (60A) so the voltage regulator is still connected. My car is a few weeks from starting up, but I'm worried it will fry the VR. Or does it not matter?

i think your best bet is call them and ask if self regulating and if not what type of regulator you can run. If you run it thru your stock regulator does not seem like you'd get the advntage of 100amps.

Here was the company response:
"hi, this alternator is used with a external regulator and the one you have now i'm sure will work fine. the voltage regulators main function is to feed 3 amps of field current to the field circuit of the alternator so there is really no undue load put on the voltage reg."
uhhh....what now ?

RE: Voltage Regulator
Just to give you a little background - I bought a chrome alternator cheapie from Advance auto - was a 60 amp no name - worked with my regulator - after 4 months of only weekend driving alternator went bad. Decided to get name brand and went with powermaster 100amp. Does not need regulator - hooks straight to battery. With Powermasters car has to hit 800 to 1000 rpm before it kick in. But that happens pretty much at startup and has not been an issue.
Does not sound like you'll hurt anything running what you got - If it goes out - get a powermaster.
